Obituary for Antonio Pimentel Tavares

Mr. Antonio (Tony) Pimentel Tavares, age of 83 years, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at Hogarth Riverview Manor on April 18, 2021.

Born on October 23, 1937 in Santa Barbara, Ribeira Grande, Soa Miguel, Acores, Portugal. He immigrated to Canada at the age of 22 in 1960 after completing his tour of duty in the Portuguese Army. Tony married the love of his life, Maria de Lurdes Martins Tavares in 1964 and had one child Isaac Tavares in 1966.

Tony was a Track Foreman for 34 years with Canadian National Railways and retired in 1994. He loved to cook Portuguese cuisine, making wine and gardening. He was notorious for his saffron and peppers that he grew. He enjoyed wood working, home improvement projects and was always willing to help others. Tony loved spending time with family and most of all, with his two grandchildren.

Tony was an active member in the Knights of Columbus and was a parishioner at St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church.

Tony will be sadly missed by his son Isaac (Michelle), grandchildren Cassandra (Leonard), Alexander (Georgia), brothers Moses (Adelaide), Lee (Elaine), his nieces, nephews and cousins. Tony was predeceased by his wife Maria de Lurdes, parents Joao and Maria Do Rosario and his brothers, Jose, Luis, Manuel, Jacinto and Joao Tavares and sister Maria Estrela.

A private service will be held on Friday, April 23, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Rev. Antoni Fujarczuk presiding. Interment to follow at St. Andrew’s Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the services may do so virtually on the Sargent & Son Facebook page.
