Obituary for Bert John Maijala

Mr. Bert John (Pertti Juhani) Maijala, age 65 years, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph's Hospital with his loving family by his side on Saturday, January 30, 2016. Bert was born in Saloinen, Finland on December 5, 1950, the son of Johan and Rauha Maijala. He immigrated to Canada with his family in April 1956. Growing up in Port Arthur was where he met his high school sweetheart and lifelong best friend Deborah Gustafson, whom he married on August 18, 1973. Bert enjoyed traveling, fishing with his son, golfing, watching hockey and baseball, especially his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. He worked for many years at the Chronicle Journal before moving to Integris Metals and lastly to Intercity Industrial Supply from where he retired. He enjoyed backyard parties with friends and neighbours. Bert's greatest joy came from time spent with his family and being a grandfather was a job that he loved dearly. He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife Debbie, son Jamie (Erin), granddaughters Aida-Lee and Seija, his mother Rauha Maijala, sisters Hannele Maijala-Inman and Elisa (Paul) Blomquist, sisters-in-law Dolly DeAgazio and Donna Lemieux, brother-in-law George Gustafson Jr. as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was predeceased by his father Johan, brother-in-law Joe DeAgazio and mother-in-law and father-in-law Alma and George Sr. Gustafson. A celebration of life of Bert Maijala will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the DaVinci Centre where words of tribute will be offered at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements are in care of Sargent and Son Funeral Directors, 21 N. Court Street. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Joseph's Foundation would be appreciated. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com
