Obituary for Claudette Marie Germaine Chicoine (Gileneau)

Claudette Chicoine
September 25, 1942 – January 19, 2022
The family of Claudette Chicoine announce, with heavy hearts, her passing after a short illness. On September 25, 1942 Claudette Marie Gelineau was born in Evain, Quebec. She worked on the maternity ward in Rouyn-Noranda for several years until she moved to Thompson, Manitoba. There, she met Peter Chicoine, married, and became a mother. Peter’s work took the family to a number of communities until 1972 when they made Thunder Bay home.

Special moments were spent with her family, especially sharing nature. Her favorites were camping, fishing, and cooking. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings and “fun” was always the order of the day! After only 16 years of marriage, she lost Peter in a tragic car accident. Claudette then demonstrated her strengthened commitment to raising her children. She ensured that there was always a home cooked meal and there would be nothing that her children would have to live without. Her love and dedication exceptional as she supported her children in every way she could.

Claudette worked as a Court Services Officer for the Superior Court of Justice for over 30 years. She loved being part of the justice system and made many lifetime friends. During her career she strived to support everyone she connected with from members of the public to dignitaries. Claudette’s retirement was marked by many parties and gatherings held in her honour. The most poignant of which, was a Court Motion ceremony. Judges, lawyers, and co-workers were called to the stand to recant their memories and well wishes for her retirement. She was genuinely honoured and touched.

Claudette started travelling in her 60’s, enjoying Disney and Wisconsin Dells with her grandchildren and destinations such as Europe, Ireland, France, and a Mediterranean Cruise with dear friends. Everyone looked forward to the trunk full of treasures whenever she returned from a trip. Her commitment to fun usually meant that her friends required weeks of rest to recover from their travelling adventures.

In her most recent years Claudette focused on staying fit. She truly looked forward to her morning workouts. She spent every day at the St. Joseph Heritage Physiotherapy Gym and made new friends there. Claudette was a proud member of the Catholic Women’s League, and she volunteered for Corpus Christi Church and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank for many years. She loved volunteering and found friendship and community there.
Claudette is survived by: Daughter Thera (granddaughter Tayla Tannnahill), Son Eric (twin grandsons Roch and Mason, and granddaughter Kennedy and their mother Jocelyn); Sisters Anita (Gaston) Coutu and Rosianne Marin (Ronald – Predeceased); Brother Jean-Guy (Denise) Gelineau; In-laws the Chicoine Family - Richard (Maggie), Edward, Ronald (Christianne), Estelle Morrill, Gaetane, Suzanne (Eric) Chicoine-Aker, Paulette (Roydon) Roslyn, Lucette (Leo) Pelland; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Peter; her parents Rene and Martine Gelineau; In-laws Sanford and Lucielle Chicoine; much loved in-laws, nephews, nieces, and cherished friends.

Special thanks to Dr. Anne Robinson, who took Claudette as a patient just weeks prior to her passing. You consistently went above and beyond to assist Claudette and her family in her short rapid illness. Her children will always see you as their mom’s “angel”; also, the ladies of Bayshore for the in-home palliative care you provided our mother in the final few days. A special thank you to everyone that expressed your love for her in her final few weeks.

Claudette was known for her commitment to excellence in all that she did professionally and personally. Her high standards showed through in everything she did from her work ethic; to her appearance; decorating her home, or the meticulous approach to gardening and cutting the grass. She had a real flair for fashion and style and was often asked to act as a “stylist” for friends and acquaintances. Claudette loved to entertain, hosting dinner parties with wonderful menus served on elegant table settings. She had a chef-like quality and literally exuded a “Joie de Vivre.”

Claudette’s life was always filled with family, fun and friends. She felt so fortunate to have been touched by so many. She made us all believe that she would outlive us all. Her children often joked that her spirit was younger than theirs. She was someone “adamantly opposed to “being old”. Claudette recently said: “I love my children and grandchildren. I love my home and treasures. I have been blessed with an incredible family, in- laws and so many friends that I love dearly. I have worked, travelled, and had lots of fun - I loved my life.”

Funeral services will be held at Corpus Christi Church (664 Red River Road) on Friday May 6th, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.
