Obituary for Corey James Birston

With great sadness we announce that Corey James Birston, age 25, passed away on July 27, 2015 following a two year battle with leukemia. Throughout all of his treatments, Corey showed great strength, courage and determination. His love of life will never be forgotten.

Corey was truly an exceptional person who touched the hearts of many. Corey's focus was always on activities that involved family and friends. Throughout his life Corey was surrounded by a group of long time friends. Corey's many interests and passions developed a further large and diversified group of other friends who shared similar interests.

Corey loved music and playing guitar as attested by his large collection of vinyl records and guitars of all kind. Through music new friendships were born. He enjoyed jamming, hanging out, listening to music and playing guitar with his friends.

Another of Corey's hobbies was hunting and target shooting. He had amassed quite the collection of firearms.

Corey was very proud of his 1969 Dodge Charger and enjoyed working on the many other vehicles he owned. Family and friends with similar interests were frequently involved in these projects that never seemed to end.

Corey attended Holy Family School and then Westgate High School. After 5 years at Confederation College, Corey had obtained diplomas in both Electrical Engineering Technology and Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering. He was excited about exploring employment opportunities in these fields but was sadly diagnosed with leukemia before he could pursue a career.

Corey is survived by his parents, Anna and Greg Birston; his sister, Lia Birston; his grandparents, Ralph and Vivian Birston and Laszlo and Gina Hetenyi; Aunt and Uncle, Tracy and Rod Merrit; Cousins Brandi and Ryan Merritt; Uncle, Doug Birston; Aunt, Shelley Birston; Aunt and Uncle, Gabriella and Darcy Otway; Cousins, Carlee and Kyle Otway; Aunt and Uncle, Olga and Guy Boisvert; Cousin, Davin Boisvert.

A special thank you to Corey's Aunt Shelley who travelled from Vancouver on numerous occasions to help provide support, assistance and care whenever Corey needed it. This unselfish devotion to family will never be forgotten. We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Corey's Cousin Brandi and his friend Ben O'Neil who both travelled great distances and made personal sacrifices to be with him.

The love of Corey's life was his girlfriend, Darby Klages, who he loved and cherished unconditionally. Darby's love, support and inspiration meant so much to Corey and his family. It is a true tragedy that Darby and Corey could not have shared more time together.

Corey loved going to camp at Eldorado Beach. He spent a large part of his life enjoying the lake, boating, sitting by the camp fire and using the sauna. As Corey got older he hosted many parties at the camp which we are sure contained many interesting memories for those who attended.

It is very difficult to imagine life without Corey. He will always be in our hearts and thoughts. The good times we all had together are great memories. The good times we would have had are the greatest loss.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life for family and friends will be arranged shortly.

In lieu of cards and flowers, the family is suggesting a donation to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Cancer Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to Sargent & Son Funeral Directors, 21 North Court Street.
