Obituary for Danica "Dana" Plasaj

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Danica (Dana) Plasaj, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. Dana passed away peacefully on Sunday May 1, 2022 with family by her side at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre at the age of 92.

Dana was born in Ozalj, Croatia on August 4, 1929. She immigrated to Canada in 1969 to live with her sister Ljuba, and Dana’s two sons followed her to Canada shortly after. She was employed in the cafeteria at Lakehead University until her retirement.

Her family remembers her as an extraordinary baker, making her famous traditional Croatian baked goods and passing them on to her family and friends. She was a wonderful cook and was still cooking for herself until her last days. She also loved to garden, plant flowers, and knit blankets.

She was devoted to her faith, reading her Bible daily, and attending the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Croatian Catholic parish for as long as she could. She also loved to attend the lunches and summer picnics at the Croatian Canadian Recreation Centre “Velebit.”

Baba Dana will be greatly missed by her two devoted and loving sons Drago (Mira) Plasaj and Marijan Plasaj (of Stoney Creek), as well as her six grandchildren: Nancy (John), Jason (Christine), Vladimir, Nikola, Daniel (Bobbi-Jo) and Valentina (Justin) (of Stoney Creek); as well as seven great-grandchildren: Vanessa, Olivia, and Julia Fratpietro and Caleb, Nya, Skyla and Cairo Plasaj. She also leaves behind sister Ljuba, Katica (in Croatia) and brother Ivan (in Croatia); also numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins in Canada and Croatia. Dana was predeceased by her brother Drago, sisters Dragica, Ruza, and Mara, and parents Dragica and Ivan.

Funeral services for the late Dana Plasaj will held on Monday, May 9, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Croatian Catholic Church (479 Oliver Road) celebrated by Fr. Francesco Blazek. Interment to follow at St. Andrew’s R.C. Cemetery for family and friends. The family would like to thank St. Joseph’s Care Group PR Cook for the last five years for helping to take care of Baba. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Dana Plasaj may be made to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Croatian Catholic parish.
