Obituary for Daniel Thomas Mitton

Daniel Thomas Mitton

May 31, 1979 ~ November 17 2022

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Dan, age 43, in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He has joined his Lord above and has been reunited with loved ones. Dan made lives happier with his humour, generosity, and his kind and gentle nature. He cared deeply about the world in so many ways.

Throughout his life, Dan liked to keep busy when he could. As a youngster, Dan enjoyed baseball, hockey, Beavers and Cubs, often with his Dad Tom along as a coach. He always loved hot days at the Current River, and fishing with Casey and Tom in Sundridge. As he got older, he took up downhill skiing and enjoyed playing tennis, which he was a natural at.

In the prime of his life, Danny was diagnosed with schizophrenia. While it became harder to engage with the activities he once loved, he was still able to enjoy watching baseball. Dan was a huge fan of the St Louis Cardinals and watched every game he could.

When he wasn’t watching the Cardinals on TV, you could find him enjoying the nostalgia of the retro music channels, especially the 80s and 90s. Falco never had a bigger fan.

His afternoons were either spent walking in nature with his Dad – enjoying the peace and company, or lunch dates with his Mom and providing mentorship to others who struggled with mental health.

Dan was a lifetime member of Calvin Presbyterian Church and fellow worshippers were very helpful and shared special moments throughout his life.

Dan is survived by his parents, Tom and Lynda Mitton, as well as his brother Casey Mitton (Leanne & Avery), and his sister Kathyrn Gribben (Josh & goddaughter Piper), as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was pre-deceased by his grandparents, Margaret & Lloyd Vester, and Leone & Russell Mitton.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dew Drop Inn and the Regional Food Distribution Association (RFDA) would be appreciated. The Dew Drop Inn was especially special to Danny as his volunteer time there was very rewarding.

The family would like to thank the mental health support staff at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, St. Joseph’s Care Group Rehabilitation Centre and especially the staff and residents of Amethyst House. The family would also like to thank the first responders and hospital staff who provided support that night.

A private service will be held at the family’s request.

Until we meet again.
