Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Ilkew

Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Ilkew

It is with heavy hearts and a profound sense of loss, that our family announces the peaceful but sudden passing of Betty Ilkew on Wednesday, January 12th, 2022, at the age of 85, with her loving husband Peter, and family by her side.

Betty was born on March 6th, 1936 in Port Arthur, Ontario to parents Pierre and Beatrice Allen. She graduated from Hillcrest High School and began working at Heizman Music Store, and later employed by Sears until meeting the love of her life while roller skating at Fort William Gardens. Peter won her heart over and married his sweetheart on August 6th, 1955. Soon after, they raised a family of six children and their incredible life began to unfold. Throughout their life together, Betty’s faith was unwavering and it touched every corner of her life. She was genuine when she greeted you and did this in a loving way, for you could not make it five feet without getting a hug from her. Her talents were far reaching but her passion for cooking was obvious, and if you walked in the back door on any given day, you would smell fresh baked bread, find preserves on the counter, or spot a pie and cookies near by. It wasn’t unusual to find her flipping through her cookbooks for a great recipe. Betty even took it a step further by catering her baked goods at Christmas time. One of Betty’s favourite things was being surrounded by her family for Sunday suppers, but in fact, it didn’t really matter what she was celebrating as long as family and friends were together. She took great pride in her flowers, enjoyed camping at Pass Lake where lifelong friends were made, kept a beautiful home, loved sewing for herself and her daughters, spoiled her puppies (Misty & Fresca), enjoyed playing cards with her sisters and girlfriends, and of course, a fun yet competitive game of dominos with her grandchildren.

She will be missed for her infectious laugh, her beautiful and loving personality, and the best hugs ever!

Betty is survived by her loving husband Peter of 66 years, their children Karen Rocco (Paul), David, Mark (Sherry), Janice Jorgenson (Brad), Darryl (Janice), Jennifer Mosley (Ken); grandchildren Andrea (Dwayne), Michael (Sasha), Marissa (Rami), Damian, Bryce, Devan & Porter, and Jordan, as well as great grandchildren DJ, Delilah & Elle, Austin & Caleb, and Ayesha.

The family wishes to thank all the incredible medical staff at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion.
