Obituary for Esther Anastasia Campbell

It is with sadness that the family of Esther Campbell announce her passing on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at her residence at Bethami Nursing Home at the age of 105 years, just short of her 106th birthday. Esther was both in Winnipeg, Manitoba to parents Catherine and John Horofker on October 15, 1912. Soon after the family moved to Stanley, Ontario. It was here where Esther enjoyed a very happy and memorable childhood with her family by blending into that small farming community of Stanley and nearby Kakabeka Falls.
The one room Stanley Community School was right next door and Esther was in a zone of happiness by embracing education, knowledge and companionship of both teachers and fellow students. Here she developed excellent writing and public speaking skills. Later she joined the 4 H Club and further enhanced her knowledge – Motto – “To Make the Best Better”.
In the early 1930’s, Esther worked at the Kakabeka Falls Red Cross Hospital with the well-known and respected Public Health Nurse, Dorothy Adams. Since the two of them were perfectionists and dedicated health workers, they got along extremely well. Many babies were delivered at this tiny hospital by this duo. Esther also worked on the Red Cross Hospital Railroad Car in Nipigon.
The Campbell family lived directly across from the hospital in Kakabeka Falls and it was here where she met Chester. They were soon married and moved to the booming mining town of Geraldton. While Chester was serving in Europe during World War II, Esther managed very well to raise her children Sharon Roger, and Allan, while at the same time supporting the war effort through the Ladies Auxiliary. During her time in Geraldton, she worked for many enjoyable years at the Chapple’s Department Store.
When their children finished their high school education, Esther and Chester moved to Atikokan and started a new period of their lives. Cottages were built, and it was here that Esther thrived at Eva Lake with her animals, birds, and gardening. Happiest when her family were with her enjoying the beauty of nature.
In 1989, her and Chester moved to Thunder Bay to be closer to family and health care facilities.
Esther is survived by her children Sharon, Roger (Joanne), Alan, and sister Cathleen. Grandchildren: Kevin, Mark (Claudia), Jillian (Brock), Dayne (Pam), Tagyn (Gerordo), Dyan (Rob), Karen (Ari), Susan (Dave). Great-grandchildren: Lindsay, Kyle, Ashley, Andrew, Avery, Aidan, Bailey, Soren, Aidan, Alexandra, Dylan, Diego, Kianna, Savannah, Serena, Sophie, Grace, Owen.
Predeceased by her parents John and Catherine; husband Chester; sisters Staffo, Ellen, Annie, Alice, Mary; brothers John, Michael, William; daughter-in-law Mary Campbell.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at the Kakabeka Falls and Rural District Branch 225 Royal Canadian Legion with Rev. Nancy Ringham officiating. Interment to follow at the Stanley Hill Cemetery.
