Obituary for Horst Friederich "Fred" Kehrer

KEHRER- Horst Friederich “Fred” was born in Klingenberg am Main, Germany on March 7, 1934. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 11, 2016. In 1954, Fred moved to London, Ontario, Canada to join his brother Wolfgang and sister Erika. Fred loved Canada and, in particular, Northern Ontario. In 1959, he married his wife Gerlinde (also from Germany) and they had two daughters, Andrea and Alexandra. Eventually the family moved from London to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario where Fred became the owner of a camera shop known as “Camera Craft” which he ran with his wife for 31 years. While living in Sault Ste. Marie, Fred was a long standing member of the Kiwanis Club. One of Fred’s favourite things to do was to drive around the surrounding area with his family and take scenic photographs. In 2008, Fred and Gerlinde moved to Thunder Bay to be closer to family. Fred is lovingly remembered by his wife Gerlinde, his daughters Andrea and Alexandra and his son-in-law Gary Schmidt, sister Erika Hackmann, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews in Canada and in Germany. He is predeceased by his parents Dorothea and Johann and his brother Wolfgang. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 in Corpus Christi R.C. Church where family and friends will gather for the Funeral Mass beginning at 9:45 a.m., celebrated by Rev. Jerin Louis. Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday evening in the Chapel of the Sargent & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 21 N. Court Street from 5-7 p.m. with the Vigil Service at 6:30 p.m. Should friends desire memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay or the charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.
