Obituary for Jack Malcolm

Jack Malcolm, age 86, passed away peacefully in palliative care at St. Joseph's Hospital on 14 August 2015.

Jack was born July 18th, 1929, in Consett, County Durham, England, where he grew up. Upon graduating high school, Jack was called up for military service. He spent the next two years doing intelligence work in Egypt and Cyprus.
Jack returned home, and enrolled in Teacher’s College. The profession turned out to be a natural fit, and Jack won the prize as the college’s most promising graduating student.

He met his wife, Barbara, while teaching in North Wales and when Jack secured a teaching post in Vancouver, they married, and the couple sailed to Canada. Five children arrived in due course: Andrew, Elizabeth, Christopher, Peter, and Clare.
Deciding they wanted to return to England, Jack secured a teaching position and the family moved again. In 1967, it was back to Canada, this time to Port Arthur where
he taught for the Catholic School Board at St. Ignatius. Jack spent a lot of his time upgrading his qualifications. He was the Board’s first Coordinator of Languages before becoming a Regional Superintendent of Curriculum with the Ministry of Education. He travelled the region assisting local schools and Boards as the Ministry’s representative.

Despite his many responsibilities, Jack always found time for camping every summer. The family spent many relaxing days at Pukaskwa, Lake of the Woods and Blue Lake.
Upon retirement, he created a 55 Plus service for a local travel agency. He and Barbara visited over 50 countries, which allowed him to indulge his “itchy legs”, as he called them.
After his wife Barbara passed, Jack began to slow down. He continued to enjoy his children and grandchildren, celebrating their achievements and welcoming their partners.

He is survived by his children: Andrew (Beverly) and children Simon (Shivaun Hoad), Nicole Stewart (Tim) & Mitchell; Elizabeth Focht (Randy) and children Sarah MacLeod (Bradley), Heidi (Robbie Cundari), Timothy, & Jonathan; Christopher (Sharon) & Peter (Tara Hawryluk).

Jack was pre-deceased by his wife Barbara, his daughter Clare, his parents, and brother Bryan.
The family would like to thank the staff of TBRH & St. Joseph’s 4North & 5North.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 24, 2015 when family and friends will gather for the Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 am in St. Margaret’s R.C. Church, celebrated by Rev. Ciaran Donnelly. A private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations to the Thunder Bay Public Library memorial fund or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
