Obituary for James Cava

CAVA- Mr. James “Jim” Cava, age 86 years, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family at his side, Friday, July 8, 2022.
He was born in Port Arthur ON, May 17, 1936, the son of Luigi and Virginia Cava. Jim worked for many years at Abitibi Provincial Papers. He was an avid sports fan, supporting his Yankees and Leafs as well as all local sports. His greatest love in sports however was watching his grandchildren play. He was their number one fan and never missed a game. Jim was a member of the Italian Society of Port Arthur, the St. Anthony’s Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus and the Thunder Bay Country Club. He possessed a kind heart, a wonderful smile and was extremely generous, opening his door to everyone. Jim carried himself with grace and dignity, never looking to draw attention to himself.
He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his daughter Kim (Joe) Nigro, son Mark (Vivian) Cava, grandchildren: Dana Cava (Jamie Funk), Joey (Vickie) Nigro, Courtney (Lukas) Olson and Nicholas Nigro (Brittany MacDonald); great grandchildren: Faryn and Jane Funk, Beau and Frankie Nigro and Leo and Jude Olson; sisters-in-law Sylvia Cava, Sonja (Maurice) Zeleny and Edith Sawicki, brothers-in-law Ron (Betty) Sawicki, as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Joyce Cava, brothers Frank and Albert Cava, sisters Sara Laine and Mary Nigro, his parents Luigi and Virginia Cava, granddaughter Vanessa Nigro, mother and father-in-law Ann and Dan Sawicki, brothers-in-law Eddy and Don Sawicki, Bill Laine and Louis Nigro and sister-in-law Moira Cava.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 when family and friends will gather in St. Anthony’s R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Rev. Luigi Filippini. Memorial visitation will be held at 10:00amin the church 1 hour prior to service time. An inurnment will take place at St. Andrew’s Cemetery following the service. As expressions of sympathy, memorials to St. Anthony’s Parish would be appreciated.
