Obituary for James "Ron" Ronald O'Quinn

It is with sadness that the family of James Ronald “Ron” O’Quinn announces his passing on November 11, 2022, in Thunder Bay, ON, at the age of 88.

Ron was born in South Branch, NL on May 21,1934 to George and Agnes (Gale) O’Quinn, the oldest of 14 children. He married Magdalen Cormier on September 24,1960 and to their union were born six children. The young family moved to Geraldton, ON in 1966, where Ron worked in the Macleod-Cockshutt mine until 1970. He then worked for Kimberly-Clark as an Arborist, a truck driver, and then as a shop worker, retiring from Kimberly Clark in 1999. In Geraldton, he was a member of St. Theresa’s Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed yearly trips back to Newfoundland to visit family, and he also did a few sightseeing tours around the states with Margie and Sandy Harkes.

Ron was passionate about nature, especially time spent on the water. He loved fishing for walleye, trout and salmon. His most memorable fishing trip was on Baker Lake, where he reeled in a 20-pound lake Trout from his dinghy. An outdoorsman through and through, he could still be found chopping and splitting wood, well into his 80s.

In 2017, Ron and Mag relocated to Thunder Bay to be near family. They were members of St. Anthony’s Church and resided at Chartwell on Hilldale at the time of his passing.

Survived by his wife of 62 years Magdalen O’Quinn; daughter Geraldine O’Quinn and her two children Cody and Grayce; son Ronnie (wife Tina) O’Quinn and their son Rydder; son Damian (wife Nicole) O’Quinn and their two children Tiffany (husband Chris) Crompton (children Carter, Tenley and Porter) and son Spencer; daughter Pamela McClory and her two children Ryley and Devon; son Derek (wife Sarah) O’Quinn and their two children Gavin and Oliver; and daughter Wendy O’Quinn; siblings Lucy, Alec, Marion, Anita, Brian, Greg, Teresa, Lori, Terry; and many, many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and extended family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents George and Agnes and his siblings Vincent, Kathleen, Francis, and Wallace.

Ron was a very proud member of the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree, and was seen running a canteen or two at the local Parish Bingo Hall; the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133. He was also a member of the Elks and Geraldton Volunteer Fire Department.

A memorial prayer service will be held on Friday, November 18, at 1:00 p.m. at Sargent & Sons, 21 Court Street North. The service will also be live streamed via Sargent & Son Facebook page.
