Obituary for Jane Marvis Glover

Surrounded with love and song, Jane Marvis Glover (Porter) passed peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, June 26, 2022 in her 78th year at Hogarth Riverview Manor.

Jane was born on June 11, 1944 in the former city of Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) the daughter of George Beverly (Bev) and Eunice Porter. For most of her life she resided within three blocks of her original family home. She attended Oliver Road Public school and later attended Port Arthur Collegiate Institute.

Following her education she worked for a few years for Bell Canada as a service representative in Toronto, Ontario. It was here that she met her future husband, David. Although she enjoyed her time in Toronto and made many great friends her heart was still in Thunder Bay. In 1968 she returned to join her family business working side by side with her parents at Bev Porter’s Sports Shops Limited. From the beginning, she had a keen eye for fashion, outstanding customer service skills and was always looking for the next great clothing line. A few years later, David joined the company and together with her parents owned and operated Bev Porters Sportswear Shop Ltd. and Club Monaco for 48 years. They were fortunate to have many wonderful longstanding staff and customers that she loved dearly. After the store closed, she continued operating her own business Jane Glover’s Dress for Success.

Jane was also very active in the community and loved giving back. She was a founding member of the Northern Cancer Research Foundation, member of the Confederation College Entrepreneur Program as mentor as well as a founding member of Dementia Café (Urban Abbey) CERAH/Lakehead University. She was an active member of North West Dementia working group until as recently as 2019. She also volunteered and served on various committees with the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay. Jane was an advocate for the charity, speaking at events and wore a shirt that stated, ‘I may have had Alzheimer’s, but it doesn’t have me’.

Her favorite place was her camp and recently her family home at Amethyst Harbour on Lake Superior. Jane spent her summers at the lake for almost her entire life. She looked forward to being surrounded by family and friends. She loved hosting parties and entertaining friends. We will fondly remember the Royal Wedding Party, picnics at Paradise Island and many family celebrations on the deck. She loved having all her grandchildren with her so she could enjoy the fun of the sports program, endless nights tubing and waterskiing on the lake, picnics at Caribou and sports weekend cheering them all on in every race.

Her greatest joy was being “Gaga”. She loved watching her grandchildren grow up. Whether it was at a hockey rink, a lacrosse field or dance recital, she had a smile on her face. She always looked forward to the St. Andrew’s College Andrean Christmas concert for the holiday music and bagpipes each year.

She also loved her memories and friendships from Sherwood Forest Camp for girls where she attended for many years as both a camper and counsellor. She looked forward to spending time on Deer Lake, Minnesota with her Sherwood ‘Cronies’ every summer enjoying camp songs, skits and lifelong friendships. It was a highlight for her every year and fond memories forever.

Jane had a special way of connecting with people. She was kind, considerate and always made time to speak with everyone. She made friends easily and loved being around people. Some of the groups she loved spending time with were her Port Arthur collegiate classmates, Gyrettes, Amethyst Harbour book club, Sherwood ‘Cronies’ and many friends she made over the years.

She will be lovingly missed by her best friend for over 53 years and husband, David Glover. Forever in the hearts and memories of her family; Katie (Glover) & Jason Henderson, Jamie & Jill (Gibson) and her grandchildren Dylan, Ryan, Lucas, Jackson and Jordan. As well as grand dogs Izzy and Cooper.
Predeceased by her parents Bev & Eunice Porter and Pryce and Connie Glover of Thunder Bay.

Thank you to the staff on 6 North for their care during her stay at Hogarth Riverview Manor.
