Obituary for (John) Brian Storry

It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Brian Storry, on Thursday September 1st at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, at the age of 78.

Brian was born in Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan on March 27, 1944. He was always proud to say he was from Saskatchewan. The family then moved to Fort William (Thunder Bay) when Brian was 8 years old. Brian attended Isabella public school and then moved on to Fort William Collegiate high school. During his younger years Brian enjoyed playing hockey, coaching hockey and was known for his “flashy” cars.

Shortly after graduating high school, Brian began his career with the Canadian Grain Commission working first as an inspector and later as a supervisor. Brian also spent one year in Winnipeg as the Chief Grain Inspector for Canada prior to retiring after 30 years of service, making lifelong friends.

On May 25, 1968 Brian married Barbara McDevitt in Thunder Bay and began their family.

Brian loved camping trips with friends and family and was known as the “fire starter”. Brian also loved to travel and made numerous trips with Barb and the family to Florida and upon retirement became a true snow bird spending many springs in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida.

Never forgetting his roots, Brian also made numerous trips back to Saskatchewan.

Brian took great pride in his yard and later the addition of his beloved pond. Most summer days, he could be found in the pond, hip waders on, making ‘adjustments.’ The last few years he relied on his friends and family to try and uphold his high standards.

There was never a stranger that Brian ever met as he had a magnetic personality and a sharp sense of humour that made everyone feel at ease as if they had known him forever. Brian was always the first to offer his help, whether it be for a friend or driving his grandchildren to their various events.

Brian is survived by his wife Barbara, and his daughters Tracey Halushak (Dave), and Alison Storry. Brian was also a very proud Poppa and # 1 fan of his grandchildren Zachary, Mikayla, Matthew, and Aidan. Also survived by brother Bill (Shela) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Brian was predeceased by his parents Sandy and Nancy Storry and in-laws Reta and Buster McDevitt, brother in laws; Allan McDevitt, Dan Wilson, Ken McDevitt, and sister-in-law Elen McDevitt.

The family is very thankful to the nurses and staff of 2B at the TBRHSC for their compassion and care. We would also like to thank the staff in the emergency department during Brian’s many visits.

A funeral service will be held at Sargent & Son’s on Friday September 9th, 2022. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am and the service will start at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dew Drop Inn, RFDA, Ronald McDonald House or charity of your choice.
