Obituary for John Cornelius De Jong

Print
It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather, Johannes (John) Cornelius de Jong on Monday, October 1, 2018 in St. Joseph's Hospice with his family by his side.

John was born in Gilze Rijen, The Netherlands on February 20, 1933 to Maria and Jacobus de Jong. He was the eldest of 6 children, always working hard from a young age to help the family. John attended trade school becoming a very skilled welder. On October 13, 1956 he married the love of his life Maria (Riet) van den Burg and together they embarked on a great journey, immigrating to Port Arthur, Canada in 1957 on the ship "The Grotebeer". John worked hard as a welder at various places rounding out the last 30 plus years of his career with Thunder Bay Welding / The Welding House. John and Riet raised 4 children that he never stopped caring for and helping. As soon as one of his kids said they needed a project done around the house he would say "I can do that" or "I have that tool". Everything he learned he taught himself and he was skilled at many, many things, from welding, to wood working, to landscaping, to home renovations, and mechanics. He was a man with golden hands.

John will be forever remembered and missed by his wife of 62 years Riet, children Frank de Jong (Sandy), Diane Nekuliak (Brad), Ingrid Britt (Donald) and Yvonne Bruno (Mimo). His grandchildren Nicole (Matt), Chelsea (Kalyn), Brody, Tyson and Nicholas.

John is also survived by his sister Jo Scherders of the Netherlands, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws, all of the Netherlands.

John was predeceased by his parents Maria and Jacobus, 2 sisters and 2 brothers.

As per John's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private internment for the family will take place at a later date.

Thank you to the staff of Jasper Place for all their great care and concern for John over the years. A special thank you to the staff of the Hospice Unit at St. Joseph's Hospital for the wonderful, compassionate care they provided to John, particularly Ruth, who went above and beyond.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of John may be made to Autism Ontario, Thunder Bay and District Chapter. Arrangements entrusted to the Sargent & Son Funeral Home, 21 N. Court Street. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
