Obituary for Manuel Fernandes Covas

Mr. Manuel Fernandes Covas, age 76 years passed away unexpectedly on Sunday March 27, 2022. Manuel was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Manuel was born February 2, 1946, in Taião, Minho, Portugal. At the young age of 16 he immigrated to France and 10 years later he immigrated to Canada where he would go on to live his life. He spent his career working at Tom Jones Construction as a concrete finisher until his retirement in June 2011. He was always proud to point out the numerous buildings he helped to build as we drove around the city.

Manuel kept his ties to his homeland by contributing to the Portuguese Association happily volunteering his time and as an active member of the board of directors. You would find Manuel working on his carpentry projects or in the garden tending to his flowers and vegetables. He also enjoyed the outdoors, hunting for moose and partridge and fishing. Wine making was also one of his joys. He enjoyed meeting up with his coffee buddies twice a week, going for his daily walks, and lately assembling and framing puzzles. He enjoyed an array of sports especially watching his beloved soccer team Benfica, the Maple Leafs, and the Raptors.

In 1997 Manuel met Filomena, and, in 2003 they joined their families together in marriage. The two made a home together and enjoyed travelling and visiting family in Canada, Portugal, and France and vacationing in warm spots. Manuel’s greatest joy was visiting with his children and grandchildren. Lovingly remembered by his wife of 19 years Filomena; children Andrea (Dean), Lee (Rachelle), his wife’s children Kerry-Anne (Scott), Ryan (Kailyn), grandchildren Charleigh, Bennett, Amélie, Caitlin, Anders, and Zoë; sisters Rosa and Martinha (Franclim), brother Hilario (Claudine) and his family in France, sister-in-law Mimi and her family, brother-in-law Norman and his family in Vancouver, B.C., and many other family members in Canada, France, and Portugal. Also left to mourn his loss are many dear friends he made throughout his various activities, his work, and his warm inviting smile.
