Obituary for Margaret Elizabeth Hyla (Weir)

Margaret Elizabeth Hyla (née Weir) passed away peacefully Monday, March 21 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Margaret was born October 11, 1938 at St Joseph’s Hospital, Port Arthur, Ontario, the youngest daughter of Jack and Pearl Weir.
Graduating from Hillcrest Commercial High School, she began her career as a secretary with the City of Port Arthur. She rose through the ranks to become executive secretary to several chief administrative officers at the City of Thunder Bay before retiring in 1994.
Margaret married Henry Hyla in 1971. Together they lived a happy and quiet life enjoying their home and garden. She especially loved her pets and her last years were spent with her beautiful cat Sir Charles.
Margaret was a longtime member of the Corpus Christi Parish and the Catholic Women’s League. She was a very caring and generous person who treasured her family and dear friends and was adored by all who knew her. Her gentle manner and easy-going personality were magnetic. Never one to seek the limelight, she always sought to make others feel valued and important, even people she didn’t know. We are all better people for having known and loved her.
Margaret is predeceased by her husband Henry and sister-in-law Anne Lushney and her husband Joe. She is survived by her sister Norma Otway and her husband Lorne, nieces and nephews Robert Otway, Richard Otway, Barbara Martineau, Linda Colvin, David Lushney and Christine Lushney.
A memorial service will be held April 5, 10:30 am at Sargent & Son, officiated by Father Victor DeGagné of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Margaret will be laid to rest next to her husband in Saint Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery.
The family wish to thank the wonderful staff of the PR Cook Apartments for their care as well as the geriatric and palliative care units at St Joseph’s Hospital for their professional and respectful care. Thanks also to her family doctor Dr. Colenego and Dr. Turner and Dr. Kelly at St Joseph’s Hospital.
Donations in Margaret’s memory would be appreciated to the Lions Vision Care Centre at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, or the Thunder Bay & District Humane Society.
