Obituary for Maria Celeste Cordeiro

Maria Celeste Cordeiro of S. Empress Ave passed away quietly and peacefully on May 31st with family by her side.

Maria was born on March 9, 1932 in Sao Miguel Azores Portugal to the parents of Jose and Adelaide (birth mother) upon Adelaide passing Jose then married Maria Santa who then raised Maria, her sister Salome and brother Valdomiro.

Maria met her love and future husband Jorge Cordeiro and went on to wed May 7, 1953. Jorge immigrated to Canada in search of a better life for his family and Maria soon followed with their two children Lazaro and Joseph. They went on to have two more children together Jorge and Maria.

It was clear that Maria was dedicated to a life of being a fantastic and wonderful mother, always thinking of their best interests before her own. After the unexpected death of her husband in 1982, Maria continued to provide her children with the love and support for them to succeed in their chosen careers.

Her love and support continued and extended to the spouses of her children Lazaro (Glenda), Joseph (Bonnie), Jorge (Rita) Maria (Terry). This love and support continued to help raise seven grandchildren in their early years. She was a proud grandmother (Vavo) to Krystal (Jeremy), Brodie (Kim), Brittney, Brandon, Madison, Kaitlin (Travis)and Kendra as well as great grandmother to Edison and Evan. This love and support also extended to her brother Valdomiro (Maria De Carmo) and their children Lilia, Lina, Valdomar, Lindzi and Isaac and families.

Other passions in her life included cooking for her family, gardening, sewing, baking and intimate gatherings with friends during many special occasions. Having worked in the farm fields with her brother and sister in her youth she developed a strong work ethic which carried into her employment at the Waverley Public Library where she worked for 15 years. Maria will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Maria was predeceased by her parents, husband Jorge and her sister.

A warm and heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses of 2C and 3C of TBRHSC as well as the doctors, nurses, rehab team, and palliative care nurses at St Joseph’s for the compassion, kindness, and care that you provided our mom.
