Obituary for Marsha Joan Sharples

Marsha Joan Sharples (Smith), age 72 years, passed away peacefully with close friend and cousin Jane MacFayden by her side on Thursday March 17, 2022 in the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital.

Marsha was born September 4, 1949 in Fort William, Ontario. Her early years were spent with her mother and grandparents on Rosslyn Road. She attended Rosslyn Road Public School and Westgate High School. After graduation Marsha began work at Bell Canada, followed by a fulfilling career with the Royal Bank of Canada on Hodder and Memorial Ave. During her 35 plus years with the bank she enjoyed good times shared with close friends, colleagues, and clients until her retirement in 2016.

Marsha loved summers at her camps at Birch Hill Lake and later on One Island Lake. She was very fond of cooking and friends and family would visit for fabulous dinners where no one left hungry. Marsha enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She looked forward to visits to the Cayman Islands during the winter months to enjoy the sand and sun and visit with her good friend Shirley Benabo, traveling to Florida with her brother Jim and sister-in-law Margaret, trips to Duluth with her good friend Kathleen, and travels to Nova Scotia to visit her brother Don and sister-in-law Marion. During her retirement years she treasured times with friends and family, traveling often to see extended family in Schreiber, listening to music and watching concerts at the Thunder Bay Auditorium.

Marsha is survived by sister-in-laws Margaret Smith and Marion Smith and a large loving family of cousins, nieces and nephews with children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her cousins Jane MacFayden, (Doug) and Lynn Wilson (Murray). Close friends Kathleen Lehto, Billie-Ann Saarinen, and Shirley Benabo hold her dearly in their hearts.

She was predeceased by her parents, Janet Smith and Clinton Smith; as well as her younger brother Donald Smith and older brother James Robert Smith both whom she was very close with.

The family is grateful for the care and understanding of the staff at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre as well as St Joseph’s Care Group. Our thanks go to Lynn and Billie-Ann for their many visits and for keeping Marsha's spirits up during the months she was in the hospital.

A Celebration of Marsha’s life will be held on Thursday July 7, 2022 between 1:00pm -3:00pm at the Sargent and Son Funeral Home, 21 N Court St N. Marsha will be laid to rest with her mother Janet at Mountainview Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com
