Obituary

Obituary for Mary Catherine McCallum (Baxter)

Peacefully at home, surrounded by her children, God called Mary home on Saturday, March 20th, 2021 in her 94th year.

Beloved wife of the late William (Bill) McCallum, she was a loving and devoted mother to Cathi (Dr. Paul) Hinton, Vernon, B.C., Dr. Bill (Maarit) McCallum, Thunder Bay, Judi (Mike) Murray, Thorndale, Brian (Mina) McCallum, Oakville, and David (Janine) McCallum, Thunder Bay.

Mary was a loving grandmother to Calli (Billy) Graham, Court (Ashley) McCallum, Dr. Darren Hinton (Trish Gerald), Maarit (Zach) Robitaille, Matt (Rose) Murray, Caitlin Hinton (Rob Brown), Hailey Powell (Andrew McGee), Dr. Christian McCallum (Megan Quinn), Colin (Kaitlyn) Murray, Hannah McCallum, Keegan McCallum (Niki Harju), Julia McCallum, Kindall McCallum (Jared McKay), Clarke McCallum and Kaelyn McCallum. Proud great-grandmother to Elliott, Annika, Rebecca, Jeremy, Lincoln, Aria, Nina, Tessa and Noah.

Predeceased by her parents Kathleen and William Baxter, brothers Bill, Robert, Bernard, Paul, Patrick and sister Rita Legace. Mary is survived by her brother Richard, sister Anne Andrews and many nieces and nephews.

The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Ek, Dr. Rohani, Hospice Northwest Palliative Care Team and the Bayshore staff. A special thanks to her brother Richard for his time and spiritual support over the last two years.

Mary’s life revolved around her family guided by her faith. Her family devotion was evidenced by the great efforts she made to attend all of her children’s and grandchildren’s educational graduations, religious sacraments and various activities both in Thunder Bay or away.

She took great pride in witnessing the successes of her family using their God given talents. As a lifelong educator, she took great pride in the fact that all her children and grandchildren obtained a post-secondary education. Mary loved spending time with family and friends in Florida, Balm Bay or visiting her out of town children. Mary’s favourite activities included playing cards with her family and bridge clubs, shopping with whoever could keep up, playing and watching tennis at the Tennis Centre and being an avid fan of Wolves basketball. Her love for sports and religion were combined with her passion for her favourite football team the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

A private funeral mass will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at St. Andrew’s R. C. Parish at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Antoni Fujarczuk. Those wishing to join the service virtually may do so on the Sargent & Son Facebook Page. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. People wishing to attend the visitation may register online or can call the funeral home 345-5351 to reserve a spot. Honourary Pallbearers will be her grandsons Court, Darren, Matt, Christian, Colin, Keegan and Clarke. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date when circumstances permit. In memory of Mary, donations to the Dew Drop Inn, St. Joseph’s Care Group or The Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.

Lynda DePiero

Bill, Maarit, Calli & Family. We are so sorry to hear about Mary's recent passing. Mary was a long time and devoted participant of our Fitness Over Fifty Over Fifty classes for many years. She attended classes 3 times a week. And would always be first to cross the finish line even though she was the oldest in the class. A true genuine lady, with a lot of spunk. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. It was a privilege to have know such a great lady and she will be missed by all. Sincerely, Lynda DePiero and Stretch and Strengthen participants.
