Obituary for Michael Dawson Grieve

GRIEVE-Michael Dawson Grieve passed away suddenly in hospital on Tuesday, January 12, 2016. He was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on November 10, 1942 to Caroline and Dawson Grieve.
Michael attended school at St. Andrews, Corpus Christi and PACI in Port Arthur, then obtained a degree in Journalism and English at Moorhead, Minnesota. A 25 year newspaper career in Moose Jaw, Winnipeg, and Thunder Bay followed.
In 1981, Michael, wife Sandra, and their three sons staked and developed the Purple Haze Amethyst Mine as a weekend and vacation pastime. In 1992, he and Sandra decided to pursue amethyst mining full time. In 1995, they acquired a second operation, the Dorion Amethyst Mine. Many happy summers were spent welcoming tourists to their roadside amethyst shop in Kakabeka Falls, at the Dorion Mine, and in later years, to their home-based shop.
Michael's joys were his family, reading, following the New York Yankees, and handcrafting beautiful giftware and jewelry featuring amethyst from the family's operations. He was busy in the workshop until the day prior to his passing, and was looking forward to another summer of adventures in the bush.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Dawson and Caroline Grieve. He will be missed by his wife of 49 years, Sandra, his sons Michael Jr. (Krista), Andrew (Fran) and Benjamin (Melissa), grandchildren, Liam and Sara Grieve, Kaleb and Ali Grieve, Joe Slyford (Amber), his sister Pauline Tomlinson (William) and their children William Jr. and Susan.
In accordance with Michael's wishes, a private family celebration has taken place. If friends desire, donations, in Michael's memory, to the TBRHS Foundation would be greatly appreciated. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
