Mona G. McEwen

March 25, 1920 - January 20, 2016

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother Mona McEwen on January 20th, 2016. She attained the age of 95.

Mona was married to Donald R. McEwen in 1940 and had celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on April 15th, 2004. They were married by the Rev. Agnew Johnson in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Fort William. It was Mona’s wish that her family and friends to know that her husband Don was her best friend, terrific husband and father.

Mona lived a full and vigorous life spending many happy summers at the family cottage at Sandy Beach, Chippewa. In her early years her dedication to her family was first and foremost. Later on she and Don enjoyed many adventures traveling throughout Canada and the U.S. Mona was an excellent self-taught musician and for many years played piano and organ at weddings, dances and other social functions. She loved meeting new people and whenever there was a piano you could be assured Mona would be there entertaining by pounding out her melodic tunes.

After Don’s death she moved into the P. R. Cook Apartments at St. Joseph’s Heritage, where she entertained by the piano for friends and patients at Bethammi Nursing Home plus the Alzheimer’s Society, which was close to hear heart. She often said how much she enjoyed bringing some fun and laughter to the eager participants. On March 24th, one day prior to her 95th birthday she suffered a stroke and then took up residence at the Hogarth-Riverview Manor where she passed away.

She was life-long member of the Argyle Chapter #10 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Port Arthur Golf & Country Club, the K-40 Club, and member of the K-past member of the Musicians Union, local 591, She regularly attended her monthly lunch bunch gatherings enjoying their companionship right up until the end. Mona was also a very strong supporter of the Friends of Marina Park and a member of St. Paul’s United Church and former member of the church choir.

Mona had a love of life and loved to be around people. She thoroughly enjoyed a lively crib game and spent many happy hours at the 55 Plus. To know Mona, was to know she was very up-to-date on current events and certainly had no trouble expressing her opinion.
