Obituary for Nina Maltese

MALTESE- Mrs. Nina Maltese, age 75 years, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2015. Nina was born in Fort Frances, Ontario on March 24, 1940, the daughter of Gabriel and Barbara Yanuschuk. She came to Port Arthur to study nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse from the Port Arthur General Hospital in 1960. It was during her time as a student that she met John Maltese for the first time at his family grocery store Maltese Grocery. The two were married on November 18, 1961. Nina was a strong willed woman whose great drive and determination enabled her to survive heart disease, cancer and a double leg amputation and still be ready to face any other challenges that might come her way. She along with her husband John and brother-in-law Rocky ran the family business for many years. Nina enjoyed gardening, music and traveling, especially her trips along the north shore of Lake Superior. She was also an avid news watcher and was always up to date on current events. Nina’s greatest love was for her family, especially her children. She was extremely proud of them and their accomplishments. She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her children Angie (Philippe Hamel) Maltese, Lisa (Andre Bourget) Maltese and Dave (Lisa Muraca-Maltese) Maltese, grandchildren: Olivia and Gabriel Maltese, Johnathan and Andrea Bourget as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by her husband John (January 1991), son John Maltese, sister Vera Gushalak and her parents Gabriel and Barbara Yanuschuk. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 when family and friends will gather in St. Andrew’s R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 10:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Antoni Fujarczuk. The interment will follow in St. Andrew’s Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be held on Thursday, June 11th from 5-7 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, where the Vigil Service will begin at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully request donations be made to the St. Joseph’s Foundation or St. Andrew’s R.C. Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to those people who performed unexpected acts of kindness by visiting Nina and giving of their time.
