Obituary for Ronald John "Ron" Kunnas

Ron Kunnas
August 26, 1940 – August 13, 2022

Ronald John Kunnas passed peacefully on August 13, 2022. Ron was born on August 26, 1940 in Port Arthur. He was predeceased by his wife, Joan, and his parents Kauko (John) and Irja (Irene) Kunnas. He is survived by his younger brother Gary (Marion), and children Shawn (Jennifer), Erin (Michael), and Kristen. He is also survived and lovingly remembered as ‘Poppa’ by his seven grandchildren Michaela, Molly, Mara, Morgan, Annika, Roxanna, and Mika.

Ron grew up in Port Arthur and had many talents including being a star guard on the PACI high school basketball team, car racing and hot rod restoration, and cooking – we will forever treasure his famous ‘Caesar salad’. In his teens he placed second in the Young Drivers of Canada driving jamboree competition in Victoria. His successful career spanned the fields of oil and gas, manufacturing sales representative, and back to his love of cars and driving. But his true love was family. He spent hours at his children’s and grandchildren’s sports activities, actively cheering them on and being there for them.

Ron was a man of conviction, always getting things done, but always with a sense of humour making everyone laugh. He loved his animal friends and was a dog favourite to many in and outside of his home. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 55 years and stood by her side during her struggles with post-polio with his whole heart. Ron recently enjoyed his friends at Jasper, his golfing buddies at Thunder Bay Country Club and coffee dates with family and friends. Our ‘Big Finn’ will be very missed and forever in our hearts.

Pursuant to his wishes no service will be held, with private interment at a later date.

Condolences can be placed through Sargent and Son Funeral Chapel.
