Obituary for Roy William Nisula

It is with broken hearts that the family of Roy William Nisula announce his sudden passing on January 28, 2023 at the age of 65. Roy was born in Port Arthur on April 3, 1957. Beloved husband to the love of his life Cheryl for 48 years. Father to sons Kris and Nick, father-in law to Lindsay and Papa to his pride and joys Madison, Hayden and Luke. Son to Annikki Soukko and brother to Violet Stockton. Roy was predeceased by father Viljo, stepfather Paavo Suokko and brother Ray. Roy was a kind and caring soul who was loved and respected by all who knew him.

Roy worked in the local construction industry for 47 years. A long-standing member of the Carpenters Union Local 1669 Roy started his career as a carpenter apprentice and retired after nearly thirty years with Tom Jones Corporation as a Superintendent. He gained countless friendships and earned the respect of everyone he crossed paths with along the way. Roy happily retired on April 1 2022 and liked to joke with friends and workmates about whether he was actually retiring or if it was an April fools joke.

Roy was an avid runner enjoying miles upon miles on the roads and trails of Thunder Bay alongside his best friends and family. Over the years he ran 40 plus marathons and countless half marathons, inspiring his sons, nieces and grandchildren to follow along in his footsteps. He participated in local running races to support the community and be around like-minded people. He seemed to know everyone at the events and loved hanging around afterwards talking to the other runners about their races. He had a way of making everyone he talked to feel special with his sincere interest and a smile.

Roy’s latest passion was cycling, he quickly became immersed in the local cycling community meeting new people and making countless friends riding on the roads in the summer and his fat bike on the trails in the winter. He loved exploring country roads with Cheryl, stopping for a coffee along the way. One of his biggest thrills was his biking trip through Italy and Spain with great friends, he was eager to get the guys back together for another trip soon.

After his recent retirement Roy enjoyed having the freedom to spend more time with his grandchildren, being able to get out for a run, ski, or bike ride whenever he wanted and enjoying a fresh cup of coffee and a butter tart with the boys. But most of all being with the love of his life Cheryl.

Funeral services for the late Roy Nisula will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday February 17 2023 at the Hilldale Lutheran Church, 321 Hilldale Road. Donation's in Roy's memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Foundation or to Hilldale Lutheran Church. Online condolences may be expressed at www.sargentandson.com

Our lives go on without you but nothing is the same
We have to hide our heartbreak when someone speaks your name
Sad are the hearts that love you
Silent are the tears that fall
Living without you is the hardest part of all
You did so many things for us, your heart was so kind and true
And when we needed someone we could always count on you
The special years will not return, when we are all together
But with love in our hearts you walk with us forever
