Obituary for Sofie Cleverdon

Sofie Cleverdon
July 22, 1924 – April 22, 2021

It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mother, Sofie Cleverdon, peacefully, on April 22, 2021, at the age of 96. Sofie was born to John and Chrissie Gerassimou in Port Arthur. She married Jack Cleverdon on November 16, 1945, and spent her life raising a family that she loved very much.

Sofie spent six years attending Central School after which she worked for her parent's restaurant, the Central Candy Kitchen, until the business closed in 1961. She was also employed at Murray's Grill and the Provincial Paper's Canteen. Sofie also was a working partner in our family business, Cleverdon Painting and Decorating. Mom shared the responsibilities with Dad as a Custodian for the Orange and True Blue Hall and the Canadian Order of Foresters. She was not afraid of a hard days’ work. Mom was widowed at the age of 59 and was there to raise her five children on her own. Another example of her strength and endurance to overcome any obstacles she faced.

Mom enjoyed her garden and tending to her flowers and apple trees in her backyard. She was also an animal lover and had many memories of the dogs and cats she cared for over her life. Mom loved visits over coffee with friends and neighbours. She also loved and appreciated a good, barbequed hamburger and desserts of any kind.

Sofie was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She always wanted the best for everyone around her and would often offer a word of encouragement to point you in that direction - sometimes with a wry smile and a little bit of humour if you were lucky. For those of us lucky enough to have her love, we knew it by the sparkle in her eye, the smile on her face, and the kindness of her words that she shared with us. Our Mom was the strongest woman we know.

Mom is remembered by her sons, Jack (Cheryl) Cleverdon, and John Cleverdon, daughter Judy (Perry) Cleverdon Kelso, and grandson Devlin. Sofie is predeceased by her loving husband, Jack Cleverdon, and sons, Jerry Cleverdon and Jiles Cleverdon.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hogarth Riverview Manor, Spruce Grove Wing for the care that they provided during a very difficult time. Most of all, thanks to Jack and Cheryl, who were the members of our family that made Mom’s life full of happiness, laughter and joy while she was in care over many years.

The family would like to thank Jack’s brothers-in-law: Blaine Pagee, Tim Pagee, and Russ Littleford, for offering their support as pallbearers.

A private family funeral service will take place at Sargent & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday April 27, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a private interment at Riverside Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the services may do so virtually on the Sargent & Son Facebook page. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
