Somerton- Albert April 29, 1924-May 31, 2013 Born in Port Arthur, Bert passed away peacefully after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer & Dementia at Dawson Court with his loving wife Jane by his side. Bert had a keen mind and a photographic memory for details. He was meticulous, methodical and determined to finish the job at hand well. In 1942 Bert enlisted with the Royal Air Force (now RCAF) and was stationed with #6 Canadian Bomber Command at Linton-on-Ouse in Yorkshire, England as Radar Operator (RDF). Returning as a veteran, Bert joined the Royal Canadian Legion as a longtime (53 year +) committed member filling many positions in the organization. Bert made a career as stationary engineer becoming foreman at the boiler plant at Provincial Paper Mill from which he retired respected by all his co-workers. His interests spanned a huge spectrum; photography, ham radio operator, woodwork using his own lathe, a collector of coins and stamps, gardening and horticultural shows, model building of boats and planes, calligraphy, oil painting scenes, sketching blue prints, writing poetry and a voracious reader Bert was interested in geography, geology, history and our environment. He enjoyed boating, biking, hiking, curling bowling and golfing, camping, fishing and trapping as well as dancing, skating, skiing and snowshoeing. A busy man of many talents, Bert still found time to volunteer and provide respite for families in need, collecting coin boxes to raise funds and bringing cheer to folks in homes for the aged.
