Obituary for Basil A. Smith

Basil A.  Smith
Mr. Basil Andrew Smith passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 28th, following a lengthy illness. Basil, who was born in Port Arthur on September 25th, 1935, was a lifelong resident of the city. Basil was a devoted husband and father who was very proud of all of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed vacationing with Alice in Arizona, where they were only too happy to get away from the snow and cold. Basil was very proud of the home that he built on Phillips Street, where he and Alice raised their family. In recent years, he lived in a beautiful condo at the Waterfront, where he spent endless hours watching the boats and ships. Basil had many interests including prospecting, reading about local history, and talking about politics. He was a great storyteller, sharing historic information with visitors, family and friends. He was knowledgeable on many topics including how things work, their repair and preservation. Basil was a man who enjoyed working and creating new projects. He was involved in many different business ventures, starting with his family business, Smith's Tire and Battery. His career included Smith and Walters Welding, Real Estate and a short time supply teaching in sheet metal. Basil was proud when his son, Sandy, joined him in establishing Garden Lake Timber. Right up until the time of his death, Basil was energized by the discussion of sales, new product ideas and business decisions. Basil will be fondly remembered by his daughter Lorraine Smith, son Sandy (Pirjo) Smith, David and Hannah, daughter Andrea Smith (Greg Symons), Lindsay and Kyle, and sister Marion (Pentti) Paularinne and sister Ruth Lovelady of Leduc, Alberta. He is also survived by dear friend, Janice Lessy, as well as, numerous nieces and nephews. Basil was predeceased by his devoted wife of 53 years, Alice, his parents, Ethel and Basil Smith and sister Lorna Smith. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 11:00 am in the chapel of the SARGENT & SON FUNERAL HOME, 21 N. Court Street with Rev. Susan Ivany presiding. Interment in Riverside Cemetery will follow the reception. Visitation for family and friends will be held Monday evening from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Sargent & Son Funeral Home.
