Obituary for Frank Mihalcin

Frank Mihalcin

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Frank Mihalcin on April 19, 2016, at the age of 81 years. Frank was born in Geraldton, Ontario on February 11, 1935 to Michal and Maria Mihalcin.

The family later moved to Thunder Bay where they settled in the East End, three doors down from Zack's. After the war in 1946, fearing another depression, Frank's family returned home to their small farm and orchard in Caklov, Czechoslovakia. At the age of 17, Frank left Czechoslovakia on his own and returned to Canada, settling in Oshawa with family friends.

It was while working in Oshawa, as a time keeper, at a bumper stamping factory, Frank saw an opportunity with Catering Trucks and knew the growing city of Thunder Bay was the place to be. In 1960, he moved back to Thunder Bay and started a company that went on to define him for the rest of his life; that company was Twin City Refreshments. It is here in Thunder Bay that he met his wife Marilyn (Sally as she was nicknamed by Frank), and where they started their family, welcoming two boys, Allan and Tod. A family business through and through, Twin City has been part of the family's daily life for over 56 years. In 1987, with his boys at the helm, Frank went into "unofficial" retirement at the age of 52 and headed to the golf course.

Frank and Sally enjoyed many years with family and friends at their camp at Eldorado Beach, visiting extended family out west in Saskatchewan, in Sudbury, and in later years, with their family and friends at their camp at Shebandowan.

Frank had many wonderful friends, some affectionately known as the "Garlic Snappers"; a very lovely and lively musical group. Frank and Sally both loved to entertain at their home and their camp where many gatherings and parties were held.

As Frank embraced his retirement, doing what he wanted to do, when he wanted to do it, he began to play more golf, being a member at both Port Arthur and at Whitewater, and making his multi-annual trips to Florida with his golf buddies.

For over 40 years, Frank he spent every weekday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am with his coffee club, playing "birdies in the bush", and catching up on the latest news. He loved to know what was going on and was a great source of information and knowledge throughout his many years.

Frank will be sadly missed by his wife Marilyn (Sally), his sons Allan (Lisa) and Tod (Jen), his grandsons Keenan, Addison and Logan and his granddaughter Emily; his sister Mary (John) Sopuch; in-laws Margret Mihalcin, Janice Dickie, Ralph Dickie, Lorraine Priddell, many nieces, nephews and relatives.

Frank was predeceased by his parents Michal and Maria, his brothers John and Michal, his Uncle Joe and Aunt Helen, his brother-in-law David Silzer, brother-in-law Ken Priddell, sister-in-law Helen Silzer, and nephew Glen Priddell.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Julie Lo for caring for Frank during his time of need.

Funeral Services for the late Frank Mihalcin will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at the Sargent & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 21 North Court Street, Thunder Bay, Ontario P7A 4T4. As expression of sympathy, donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Frank's memory to the MS Society, Northern Cancer Fund or to a charity of your choice.
