It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts.. we the family of George Edward Mckay announce the untimely passing of our friend, father and grandfather at the ripe age of 84 1/2 with his loving family by his side on December 21, 2017.
Dad was born on June 21, 1933 to parents, George and Edna Mckay. He was the eldest of four children. He was a lifelong resident of Thunder Bay. Pops met and married the only love of his life, our mother Margaret on August 18, 1956. In dad's words, it was 60 of the best years of his life. Dad was a family man, a great provider, always thinking of his family before himself. He was a tireless worker, working from sun up to sun down. A perfectionist in everything he did. And as per his kids, if you are not going to do it right the first time, don't do it at all. Throughout dad's life woodworking was of great interest in his early years. In retirement it became his passion. In dads eyes oak was the only wood with character. It took him 5 years to perfect the gorgeous solid oak kitchen cabinets that he built for mom. A masterpiece that he and mom were so proud of. Mom and dad had a passion for music. They travelled extensively through North America with their motor home stopping at every music festival they could find making many new friends along the way. Lake Superior had a calling that always drew dad to it. This love he was proud to have passed on to his son George Jr.
Pop's started his working career at the young age of seven with his father, commercial fishing out of Porphery Island, Walkers Channel & Carghill Island. After fishing dad staked claims for Monpray Uranium during the winter months. He spent 15 years working the summer months for Haquoil Construction as a heavy equipment operator. After which the City came calling for his well known operator services. He retired after 25 years of service from the city as a heavy equipment operator. After a heavy snowfall, if you woke up in the morning and the end of your driveway was full of snow from the grader, many times he was to blame for his midnight time shifts. Dad was a lifetime member of St Stephens Anglican church and held god close to his heart.
Pop's is survived by his four children. Janis (Brian) Ahonen, Bonnie (Paul) Hutton, Gina (Dan) Rogers & George (Shelley). He was Papa to Grandchildren: Jennifer, Danny, Ryanne, George Jr, Gillian & Rachel. Great grandchildren: Deven (Papa Beep) & Colten. A special niece known as a fourth daughter, Robin Ratz (Doug) Sister Tene Egland (BC), brother Robert (Gloria) Mckay as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Predeceased by his loving wife Margaret (2016). Parents George & Edna Mckay. In-laws Charles & Mary Cummings.

Dad was an amazing man who taught us the true meaning of love, determination, work ethic, and how to be a true person. Dad told us kids numerous times each and every day, how much he loved us. Anyone who knew dad, knew he was a man of few words. He may have been silent, but his presence was enormous. We his children were very privileged and proud to call him Pop's. We will miss you forever. We love you dad!

A memorial service for George will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday December 29, 2017 in the Chapel of Sargent & Son Funeral Home, 21 North Court St. with Rev. Canon Ed Swayze presiding. Reception to follow at Sargent & Son dining room. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Sargent & Son Chapel.
