KUZNEZ- Helmi Eliisapeth Kuznez went to be with her Lord and Saviour, at Pinewood Court, on Wednesday morning, February 11, 2015. Helmi was born in Wapella Sask. on May 6, 1914, the second of four children. She took on many responsibilities at only nine years of age caring for the home and her two younger siblings when her stepmother passed away. This meant doing all the cooking and cleaning and laundry. She lived in Saskatchewan until her marriage to Wilfred Raketti on July 31, 1936, and moved to Nipigon. She was predeceased by her husband in 1960. After moving to Thunder Bay, Helmi worked in the dietary department at Port Arthur General Hospital where she met Alex Kuznez. They were married on May 20, 1961. They enjoyed fishing, hunting and berry picking together. They built their own camper which they lived in while building their house. Alex predeceased her in 1996. Helmi also worked in the dietary department at Dawson Court before she retired. She was an avid gardener and loved to share the bounty with others. Helmi is survived by her nieces, Sandra (Allan) Piper, Linda (Brian) Woodbeck, Sonja (Percy) Stephenson, Leona (Shawn) Merrifield and Bonnie (Anthony) Fiorito, a nephew Richard Maki, and many great nieces and nephews and their children who were special to her. She was predeceased by her parents, Elias and Lempi Katajamaki, her two brothers, Arvo and Chuck, her sister, Elsie, and brother-in-law, Leo. Funeral services for Helmi will be held on Saturday February 14, at 11 a.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Farrand St, where she was a member for many years. Pastor Matthew Deigle will officiate. Prior to the service, family and friends are invited to gather at the main gate of Riverside Cemetery at 10 a.m. for the internment. Visitation for friends will be held on Friday, February 13, 2015 from 4-5 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street.
