Obituary for Joyce Margaret Swartz

JOYCE SWARTZ nee GODFREY
23 JUNE 1924 ~ 01 SEPTEMBER 2014
Mrs. Joyce Swartz, age 90 years old, a resident of Thunder Bay, peacefully passed away in her sleep September 1st at Grandview Lodge. Joyce was born and raised in Fort William and was the middle child of a family of 8 children. Mum was a beautiful young girl and lady who always made sure that her appearance was top drawer right up to the end. Mum had a memory that was infinite and was a wonderful storyteller. Her quick wit that never waivered right to the end, she inherited from her British Born father Horace Godfrey of Margate, England. Mum's feistiness and conviction came to her naturally from her mother Mayzella. Mum was always Daddy's Little Girl whom he affectionately called Ginger because of her lovely mane of hair. Mum adored her father and was so proud of her British heritage which is carried on by her daughter Myra. Recently Mum found out from her Grandson Nathan, who has been doing ancestry work, that she was related to Winston Churchill, and on hearing this news she was over the moon. Mum moved into Grandview a few years ago but quickly became a social butterfly who entertained all those around her. Maija, her roommate, was an Angel to our Mum, always making sure that Mum was taken care of. In speaking with the other ladies they say the hole that she has left, will be large. They say that they have never met such a lady, who always looked her best, possessed impeccable manners and always made them laugh. Whilst Mum was at Grandview she had another Angel taking care of her by the name of Jillian. Jillian cared for Mum just like she was her own Mum. We are forever grateful for all the visits of her sister-in-law Paulette Godfrey. Though developed late in life we discovered that Mum had hidden artistic talents and it was clear to see why her son Ben is such a talented artist. Mum was always so proud of her work and loved to see it displayed during her many visits to her daughter Myra's house. Joyce is survived by her eldest son Gregg(Deneen), William(Kim), Ben (Marilyn),daughter-in-law Karen, daughter Adele and her baby who came late in life, Myra Beck. Joyce is also survived by many grand and great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Mum had a special love for her furry grandchildren which she always loved up during her visits to Myra's house and their visits to Grandview.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents Horace and Mayzella Godfrey, her husband William, her in-laws,dear son Bruce, brothers, Francis, Stanley, Derwood, Harland and Kenneth, sisters Violet and Evelyn, son-in-law Martin Beck, who always kept her entertained and on her toes, and her granddaughter Shannon.
Mum will have a graveside service at Riverside Cemetery on Friday October 3 at 2 pm. Friends and Family are welcome. There will be a private dinner at Bight.
