Obituary for Leo Carl Matt Nystrom

With sad hearts the family of Leo Nystrom, of Chartwell, announces his passing on Monday, November 16, 2015 at TBRHSC at the age of 81. Leo was born on June 5, 1934 in Port Arthur, to Aino and Matt Nystrom. Growing up in the Bay/Secord area, he attended Cornwall Public School and P.A.C.I. At a young age, Leo began working at the family business, Kivela/Matt’s Bakery until its sale in 1965. He then went on to moving and travelling extensively in the wholesale foods industry, finally settling back in Thunder Bay in 1973 where Leo and Elsie were 35 year residents of Waverly Park Towers. He remained a lifelong member of ATC, helping in their charity activities.
Leo enjoyed all sports, playing hockey, baseball, golf, bowling and curling. He was a long time member of the Thunder Bay Country Club, winning the Club Championship in 1983.
On December 27, 1952, he married his high school sweetheart Elsie Andrusyk, enjoying almost 60 years together. Being fans of country music, they travelled often to spend time with their friends Johnny Cash and George Jones. Leo and Elsie both also enjoyed trips to casinos especially Las Vegas.
Family was very important to Leo. He was a special “Leo Papa” attending many Christmas concerts, recitals and watching sports together.
Leo is lovingly remembered by his son Bryan (Irma), grandsons Matthew and Michael, brother Erick (Bonita) and nephews Gary (Shannon) and David (Natasha) as well as family and cousins in Finland.
He was predeceased by his parents Aino and Matt and by his wife Elsie (2011).
Funeral Services for Leo will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2015 in the Chapel of the Sargent & Son Funeral Home, 21 N. Court Street with Rev. Jari Lahtinen officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
