Obituary for Lorne Saxberg Mr.

t is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our son, brother, uncle and friend, Lorne Saxberg. Lorne's untimely passing on May 6 in Thailand during one of his many adventures has been a shock and tremendous loss to us all. Born in Port Arthur, Lorne attended Claude E. Garton Public School, Lakeview High School, and was always proud to say he was a graduate of the Radio and Broadcasting program at Confederation College. He was also a member of First Baptist Church. From childhood, Lorne's interest in the media was well-known to friends and neighbours, many of whom starred in his home movies or attended movie showings in the basement of his family's Current River home. Lorne's pursuit of a good story and his determination to tell it well were evident even in those days. These beginnings led to a long and successful career as one of Canada's most respected radio and television anchors. He began his career at Cable 7 in Thunder Bay, moved to CFPA and then on to CBQ. His time as co-host on Daybreak, CBC's local morning show, as well as his many appearances as co-host of the Cystic Fibrosis Telethon, are fondly remembered by many Thunder Bay residents. Lorne moved to Toronto, continuing in radio until CBC launched Newsworld in 1989. He then started his television career, becoming one of Newsworld's original anchors. During this time, he also taught a broadcasting course at Humber College, which he found very rewarding. After 27 years with CBC, Lorne's adventurous spirit led him to new challenges in Japan. Two years ago, he took a leave from CBC and accepted a position in Tokyo with NHK, Japan's national broadcaster, as an announcer and trainer. He recently won the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for a documentary he wrote and hosted on the 60th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima. Lorne's many interests included history, especially the history of Silver Islet. He and his family bought and restored the Silver Islet General Store, which drew him back to the north shore of Lake Superior each summer. Silver Islet and the close friends he made there held a special place in his heart. It wasn't unusual to see Lorne serving up a piece of his Mom's pie to a tea room visitor, and then sitting down to chat. Lorne will be lovingly remembered and missed by his parents, Lorne and Joan Saxberg, sisters Nancy Saxberg and Sandy Korkola (brother-in-law Jeff), and brother, Bob Saxberg. Uncle Lorne will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephew, Olivia and Jesse Korkola, and Lauren and Madeleine Differ Saxberg (father Jim Differ). His loss is felt by his many friends, including David Kelley, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, May 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Sargent & Son Family Reception Centre, 21 N. Court Street. Funeral services will take place Thursday, May 18 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's United Church, 349 Waverley Street. www.sargentandson.com.Should friends desire, the family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Capital Campaign for CAMP (Centre for Applied Media Production) at Confederation College in Lorne’s memory. A portion of the new facility will be named in his honour. (Call the Foundation at 807-475-6460 or toll free 1-800-845-7735).
