Obituary for Margaret Ann Ogden

Margaret Anne Ogden (nee MacDonald) passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 22, 2018 at the age of 66.

Marg was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on April 21, 1951. She was the first born and only daughter of Alistair and Jean MacDonald (nee McNaughton). She attended Port Arthur Collegiate Institute and later earned a Degree in Arts (1982) at Lakehead University.

In 1976, Marg began working for the Government of Canada at the Pigeon River Crossing, and it was here that she discovered her passion for public service. During her 35 year career as an Immigration Officer, Marg exemplified what it meant to be a Canadian: in the absence of judgement, every newcomer was greeted with warmth and objectivity, flexibility and fairness. Marg believed in the best of people, and was patient and kind as she helped newcomers settle, find a home in our county, and eventually become citizens.

Marg was an amazing single mother, role model, confidante and friend to her two daughters, Laura and Heather. Neighbourhood kids and the girls’ friends from school would often descend on the house - led by the two girls who had learned from their mother the value of community - and Marg would do her best to feed everyone.

Marg was an avid reader, paying regular visits to the library. She loved bowling and could often be found at Mario’s Bowl, alongside many friends with whom she’d played for decades. She proudly volunteered for Operation Red Nose at Christmas time, helping to make sure that party goers made it home safely.

Marg was predeceased by her mother Jean in 1995. When her father became ill she cared for him until his death in 2014. At the time of Marg’s passing, she had also been giving the same love and care to her younger brother, Ian. Marg was predeceased by her brother, Donald (Grant) MacDonald, in 2016.

Marg’s unexpected passing is mere days before the birth of her first granddaughter, as Heather and Matt Duke expect their baby any day now. Our mom will be greatly missed at the wedding of Laura and Brandon Taddeo this upcoming July.

A celebration of Marg’s life will be held Friday, January 26th from 2-4 at Sargent and Son, 21 Court Street North. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local library or St. John Ambulance.
