Obituary for Marguerite Somerton

SOMERTON- It is with great sorrow that we, the Somerton family, announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother; Marguerite Jacqueline Somerton. She passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, September 12, 2003. Marguerite was born in North Sydney, Nova Scotia on July 29, 1928. She moved to Port Arthur with her family in the early 1940's; where she met the love of her life Bert Somerton. She attended Port Arthur Technical Institute and Commercial High School. Marg loved 10 Pin Bowling and bowled for many years with a local women's team and the Port Arthur Provincial Mixed Team; acquiring numerous awards and trophies. As a devoted mother to 3 daughters and loving wife to Bert; family was first and foremost to Marg. " I am a Domestic Engineer"; she would proudly state. Summers spent at Hawkeye Lake are treasured memories for her family. Marguerite was a graceful swimmer who loved the water. Knitting and crocheting were her passion. The girls always had new sweaters and hats. All seven grandchildren received many hand made outfits as children and large crocheted blankets as adults. She has five great granddaughters she has also provided for. Marg's quiet nature and wry sensed of humour are qualities that will touch her friends and family forever. Marguerite will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her husband Bert with whom she shared 55 years of marriage, 3 daughters: Lynda Somerton and partner Wayne Kotovich, Gail Wilen and husband Ryan, and Wendy Richardson and husband Louie of Vancouver, B.C.; 5 grandsons: Chris, Cory, Kevin, Jerred and Curtis; 2 granddaughters: Mandy and Erin; 5 great granddaughters: Hannah, Cerena, Emily, Autumn and Aurora; brothers: Danny (Nell) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Chuck (Ann) of Nanoose Bay, British Columbia and Stan (Jean) of Thunder Bay as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by her mother Violet M. Herridge, father Otto Daniel and youngest brother Howard. As a resident of Good Shepherd Village for six years she will be fondly remembered by many friends there. When able to, Marg enjoyed Bingo Night and various social gatherings. It would be impossible to personally name each individual who provided care and support for Marg and her family during her lengthy illness. A special thank you to the staff at the Thunder Bay Cancer Clinic, Thunder Bay Medical Center, McKellar Hospital, Port Arthur General and all the angels at St. Joseph's Care Group- Palliative Unit and Hospice Unit.
