Obituary for Maria Chiodo

The sun has set for our beloved family matriarch. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Maria Caterina Chiodo on Thursday, December 20, 2012 with her loving family by her side. She was born to Luigi and Filomena Notarianni on May 4th, 1910. She married Guiseppe Chiodo on the 20th of April, 1927 and they had eight children. Always with a vision, they earmarked North America as the place to be, so they slowly started immigrating to Port Arthur. She immigrated to Canada to join the rest of her family in May 1957 and was a wonderful and dedicated homemaker to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her loving children, Pietro (Ida) Chiodo, Luigi (Gina) Chiodo, Alfredo (Leila) Chiodo, Nellina (Domenico) Mercuri, Ottavio (Emma) Chiodo, Victor (late Rena) Chiodo, Mena (Arnaldo Pierino) Maletta and son-in-law Tom Cianfagna, and nephew Ralph (Fiorina) Costanzo. She was treasured by her 31 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Guiseppe (1973), daughter Rosa Cianfagna (1989), niece Anna Marie Chiodo Avila, great-granddaughter Lily Gusola and loving daughter-in-law Rena Chiodo. Early on she lost her parents, sisters Costanza (Portland Oregon) Carolina, and Santula along with other numerous sisters and brothers in law in Italy. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2012 when family and friends will gather in St. Andrew’s R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 10:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Luigi Filippini. A private interment will be held in St. Andrew’s Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be held on Friday (this evening) from 6-8 p.m. in St. Andrew’s R.C. Church where the Vigil Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations to the St. Joseph’s Foundation-Hospice Unit would be appreciated. Arrangements are in care of the Sargent & Son Funeral Directors, 21 N. Court Street. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
