Obituary for Mauno Juhani Teikari

Mauno Juhani Teikari
Mr. Mauno Juhani Teikari, age 83 years, passed away with his family by his side early Sunday morning, July 17, 2016 after a lengthy illness in hospital.

Mauno was born in Kuortane, Finland the oldest of 4 children to Juho and Hilma Teikari. In 1956, he came to visit his uncle in Port Arthur and decided to stay where he has lived since that time. He met and married the woman of his dreams, Vieno Louko and would go on to spend the next 54 plus years together until her passing March 6th of this year.

For over 40 years, Mauno was a skilled worker in the forest industry. He was very proud of his work accomplishments and believed that to do the job right you had to give it your all. Hard work, honesty and integrity were important values to him and he instilled these beliefs in his daughter Airi at a young age.
Mauno was the ultimate armchair referee and coach. His calls in any sport whether it was baseball, golf, curling, wrestling or hockey to name a few would make Don Cherry look tame. In his younger years while in Finland, he was an avid cross country skier and excelled as a biathlon athlete. This love for the outdoors would continue with hunting and fishing in the summer and the winter and who can forget his love of the spring time smelt run. His family and friends were important to him and he enjoyed dancing, entertaining and visiting with them. He loved music especially traditional Finnish dance music but wasn't much of a singer. Mauno also loved to garden with his wife. He liked to sit in the backyard and feed the birds and his chubby little "Chico's" - the chipmunks and watch the deer. Once retired, he enjoyed watching gameshows and playing solitaire where he was always a winner.

Mauno had a great love of life and his Finnish "sisu" and stubbornness got him through the many health issues that he faced. He loved to laugh, joke and had a great sense of humour. He could charm you with his irresistible smile and wink. He will be missed and loved by all who knew him.

Survived by his daughter Airi; brother Yrjo (Maija) and Heikki (Kaarina) and their families in Finland; sister-in-law Seija and her daughters Liisa and Maria (Samuel) in Thunder Bay; brother-in-law Heikki (Marja- Liisa) and their children in Finland as well as numerous cousins and extended family in Canada and Finland.

Predeceased by his loving wife Vieno, his parents, his sister Irma and her husband Samuli, his mother and father-in-law Jaakko and Elsa, brother-in-law Oiva and numerous other family members.

The family of Mauno would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of TBRHSC for their care and compassion towards him. Thank you also to the staff in the physio therapy department - you were awesome with him!

A memorial service for both Mauno and Vieno Teikari will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Sargent and Son Funeral Home, 21 North Court St. Interment of ashes will follow in Riverside Cemetery where Mauno and Vieno will be laid to rest in the family plot.
