Obituary for Settimio "Sam" Arella

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Settimo “Sam” Arella at the age of 69. Sam fought a yearlong battle with cancer, which ended on Thursday October 30, 2014 with his family by his side.
Sam was born on April 21, 1945 in Sierra Aiello, Cosenza, Italy. He immigrated to Canada with his mother Maria and brother Adam in December 1959. On June 22, 1968 he married the love of his life Rita Fabiano.
Sam was a member of the Italian Cultural Centre-Port Arthur, and belonged to the Labourer’s Union Local 607, as well as Carpenter’s Local Union 1669. He worked for various construction companies until he started his own business “Arella Concrete” with his brother Adam.
His passion was his faith, the outdoors and gardening. Sam was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed being with his “gang”. Sam was truly proud of his Italian Culture. This was evident in his ability to enjoy what he loved the most making sausages, wine and tomatoes in the off season. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the camp he built at Open Bay Lodge. He deeply cherished family values. All who knew Sam considered him as a man of great generosity and kindness; he truly had a heart of gold. Anyone that visited Sam at his home never left empty-handed. Sam’s love for children, especially his 7 grandchildren which were his pride and joy was very evident.
Due to his health over the past year, Sam physically retired from work, however his heart never left, and was assured that his children would carry on the family business.
