Obituary for Thomas Mustapic

Thomas George Mustapic
August 7, 1959 – December 18, 2020

Peacefully at his home on Friday, December 18th, Thomas George Mustapic, age 61 passed away in the arms of his loving family after a difficult battle with ALS. Tom was born in Port Arthur to Ruth and George and attended Vance Chapman and Lakeview High School. He graduated from Lakehead University in 1982 and obtained his Chartered Professional Accountant designation. He worked at The City of Thunder Bay and Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, retiring in 2014. Tom was a valued member of the Board’s senior leadership team and was proud of his contributions to Catholic education in Thunder Bay.

Tom was a true gentleman and was admired and respected by all who met him. He was a mentor to many and a friend to all. He was a wonderful husband and father and always put his family first. Tom’s legacy of kindness, generosity and love will live on through his sons, Christian and Matthew. He was happy to attend all their academic and sporting activities and was so very proud of them. There are many wonderful family memories of trips to Boston, Chicago, New York, San Diego, San Francisco and many cities within Florida and Canada that will be cherished forever.

Tom served on many local boards over the years including The Thunder Bay Country Club, The Thunder Bay Parking Authority, St. Joseph’s Foundation and Thunder Bay Blaze Basketball. In addition, Tom was a long-time member of the St. Anthony Holy Name Society and bowling league as well as being an Associate Member of the Italian Cultural Society of Port Arthur. He loved all sports and was an avid golfer enjoying many golf trips, especially to the Masters, with friends. In his earlier years, he was a competitive curler in the Major League of Curling at the Port Arthur Curling Club, where many lasting friendships were made. Tom also enjoyed spending time at camp at MacKenzie Beach and loved working around the yard, swimming and bike-riding.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Cindy and their children Christian and Matthew; mother Ruth; sister Julie (Donal) Ballance; brother Dan (Chris), mother-in-law Joan Rigato; brother-in-law Michael (Celia) Rigato and their children Michelle and Anthony. He was predeceased by his father George, grandparents Minnie and Charles Ruzick, Andja and Matt Mustapic and father-in-law Ed Rigato.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mary Valente, Dr. Miller and the palliative team, and the Paramed nursing and home care staff, especially Sunny. This team helped Tom to stay at home until the end and we will be forever grateful for that.

Cremation has taken place and a private family Funeral Mass will be held at St. Margaret’s Church on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 beginning at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Father Donnelly. Those wishing to view the service via livestream may do so by going to Sargent & Son Facebook page. A celebration of life will take place when current restrictions allow, so the many people whose lives Tom has touched can attend.

Tom was a devoted member of the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board community and he enjoyed coaching the boys’ basketball team at St. Ignatius High School for many years. He loved to help students reach their highest potential in academics, athletics and life. A scholarship has been established in memory of Tom to recognize a student who shares Tom’s values of hard work, dedication, respect, commitment, leadership and willingness to help others. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations to Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board Awards Trust Fund – Tom Mustapic Memorial Scholarship at would be greatly appreciated. Remember Me
Don’t remember me with sadness,
Don’t remember with me tears,
Remember all the laughter,
We shared throughout the years.
Now I am contented
That my life it was worthwhile,
Knowing that as I passed along the way
I made somebody smile.
When you are walking down the street
And you’ve got me on your mind,
I’m walking in your footsteps
Only half a step behind.
So please don’t be unhappy
Just because I’m out of sight,
Remember that I’m with you
Each morning, noon and night.

Cindy, Matthew and Christian,
I am so deeply saddened to have learned of Tom's passing. It was an honour and a privilege to have known Tom and to have worked alongside him at TBCDSB. His commitment to serving the students in the Thunder Bay Catholic community was evident each and every day. I know that he will be missed greatly by many. Although no longer in Northern Ontario, all of you will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Eternal rest and peace grant unto him, O Lord.
