Obituary for Vieno Marjatta Teikari

Vieno Marjatta Teikari
Mrs. Vieno Marjatta Teikari (nee Louko), age 74 years, took her last breath and closed her eyes for the last time early Sunday morning, March 6, 2016 with her loving daughter by her side after a lengthy illness in hospital.

Vieno was born in Ylistaro, Finland the oldest of three children to Jaakko and Elsa Louko. In 1957, along with her family, she moved to Canada and Port Arthur where she has lived since that time. She met and married the love of her life, Mauno Teikari and this April they would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

Vieno was very active and social within the Finnish community and preserving her Finnish heritage was very important to her. She loved people and spending time with her family and friends. Family get togethers and feeding people were important to her. She enjoyed her ritualFriday night sauna’s at her sister’s reminiscing about growing up in the good old days. She loved to travel and explore new places. Her daughter Airi was her best friend and together theytravelled many times to the beaches of Mexico and for weekend getaways in search of good bargains. She enjoyed the outdoors and gardening and spreading her green thumb knowledge to anyone who was interested. Vieno loved her flowers and spent countless hours perfecting her flower beds. Her backyard was her pride and joy where she fed her birds, chipmunks and even the occasional deer.

Vieno had a great love of life. No one could match her energy or “sisu”. She loved to sing, laugh and had a wonderful sense of humour. She was a busy lady who was always willing to help others no matter what time of the day. Her smile and her faith will always be remembered by those who knew and loved her.

Survived by her husband Mauno and daughter Airi; sister Seija and nieces Liisa and Maria (Samuel); brother Heikki (Marja-Liisa), niece Katri and nephew Kari of Finland; brothers-in-law Yrjo(Maija) and Heikki (Kaarina) and their families of Finland, cousins and extended family in Canada, the USA, Finland and Sweden.

Predeceased by her parents, her mother and father-in-law Hilma and Juho, sister-in-law Irma and husband Samuli, brother-in-law Oiva and other family members.

The family of Vieno, or “V” as she was affectionately known, would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of TBRHSC for their care and compassion during her stay there. Many of you went above and beyond to make sure Vieno was comfortable when we couldn’t be there. You know who you are and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

A memorial service for both Mauno and Vieno Teikari will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Sargent and Son Funeral Home, 21 North Court St. Interment of ashes will follow in Riverside Cemetery where Mauno and Vieno will be laid to rest in the family plot. If friends so desire, donations to the Lung Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation in memory of Mauno and Vieno would be greatly appreciated.
