Life Story for Edward George "Caesar" Knudsen

Edward George "Caesar" Knudsen

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Edward George "Caesar" Knudsen in the early morning hours of May 9th, 2015. Ed had faced his recent diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis with courage and dignity.
Born in Fort Frances, he moved to then Port Arthur with his family at the age of 9 months. He attended Pine Street School, P.A.C.I and the University of Manitoba.
His true calling was to be that of an educator and following graduation from the Ontario College of Education he began his 32 year teaching career with the Lakehead Board of Education at Hammarskjold High school. He was a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher who earned the respect of his colleagues and students who affectionately called him "Mr K " and "the big guy".
Ed loved the written word and was an avid reader, enjoying everything from Shakespeare and the classics to a good mystery novel. He was a master at solving crossword puzzles.
He and Helen (Scott) were married in 1968 and together they raised their two children Kierce and Erik. Ed was a devoted husband and father who supported his children with encouragement and love. He especially loved being Poppa to his grandsons Garrett and Jack and special grandchildren Brent and Hannah Russell.
Ed enjoyed many facets of life over the years, particularly summers spent with family and friends at the family cottage on Lake Shebandowan. Spending winters in Florida the past several years where he and Helen made lasting friendships brought him the greatest joy. He enjoyed his weekly golf games and lunches with fellow retirees and lunches with the "Merry Mariday Park Lunch Bunch" dear friends from high school days.
Ed lived his life with kindness and humility. He was a warm and caring friend; always willing to help, never asking anything in return. A friend recently said "losing a friend like Ed who never said a bad word about anyone is like losing a piece of your life and personal history".
As a grateful cancer survivor Ed volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society's "Wheels of Hope" program driving cancer patients to and from treatments and appointments. For many years he and Helen have been active volunteers with the Society's Relay for Life and numerous fund raisers.
Ed was predeceased by his parents Erik and Grace Knudsen, brother Erik Knudsen, and sister Honour Coley, mother-in-law Queenie Scott, brother-in-law Raymond Scott and sister-in-law June Russell.
Ed will be deeply and forever missed by his wife Helen, who he lovingly referred to as his "manager", daughter Kierce Ankarlo (Dan), son Erik Knudsen (Laura), Cambridge, Ontario, grandsons Garrett Brown and Jack Knudsen, sister Kris Humaniski (Tim), godson Mathew and Dillon Humaniski, sister-in-law Norma Knudsen, brother-in-law Glen Coley, and numerous nieces and nephews particularly Scott Russell (Theresa) Kerri and Kerri Scott Masseo (Mark)
As per Ed's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial reception will be held in the Sargent and Son Family Reception Centre, Thursday, May 14th at 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests donations be made in Ed's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society. On-line condolences can be made at www.sargentandson.com

He was a special, selfless man who went "gently into the night".
