Obituary for Joan Evelyn Gooding (McIlwraith)

GOODING- Mrs. Joan Evelyn Gooding, age 83 years, passed away peacefully in the T.B.R.H.S.C. on Friday, January 17, 2014. Joan was born in Toronto on January 3, 1931 to Alexander and Lillian McIlwraith and graduated in nursing from the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1953. Joan had resided in Thunder Bay since 1962 where she was a member of the Port Arthur General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and also provided nursing care at Bethammi Nursing Home for a few years. At the Port Arthur Country Club, Joan enjoyed golf and curling. She loved to entertain friends and looked forward to her regular bridge games and her annual trips to Barbados. Joan’s family came first and foremost in her life and it was during time spent with them that she was the happiest. She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her husband Dr. John Gooding, children Kathryn (Don) Archibald, Deborah (Peter Hill) and Brian (Joanne) Gooding, grandchildren Jennifer Archibald and Jillian and Charlie Gooding and brother Gordon McIlwraith. She was predeceased by her granddaughter Erin Gooding. A service to celebrate the life of Joan Gooding will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Archdeacons Deborah Kraft and Mark S. Conliffe presiding. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses and support staff at both the T.B.R.H.S.C. and Chartwell for the care and compassion shown to Joan and her family during her time with them.
