Obituary for Stefan Simcic

Stefan Simcic
Stefan Simcic passed away peacefully on Sunday November 20, 2016 with his loving family by his side.

Stefan was born in 1933 in the small village of Susak, Slovenia. He was very proud of his heritage, and loved to share his many fond childhood memories with his family.

From a very young age, Stefan learned the true meaning of staying strong as he witnessed the tragic events of the Second World War and took a bullet to his shoulder.

In 1956, looking for employment, adventure and an opportunity for a better life, Stefan immigrated by ship from Slovenia to Port Arthur with an empty suitcase and five dollars in his pocket. In his early days in Canada, he worked in Northern Ontario bush camps. In 1968, he began work at Richardson Grain Elevators until his retirement in 1993.

Together with his wife Zdenka, Stefan raised two children, Diana and Norman, who he was very proud of. He adored and cherished his grandchildren and loved to spend time with them. He loved sharing history stories with his daughter and he would always take a break after working in the yard or garage to have a cold beer or two - or three - under the apple tree with his best friend and neighbor, his son Norman. Stefan had a strong work ethic and instilled these values in his family. He enjoyed doing home improvements and working on projects, including building custom-made doghouses. He took great pride in his vegetable garden, always ensuring there was an abundant supply for his children’s families.

Stefan leaves to mourn with heavy hearts his wife Zdenka, daughter Diana (David) Perrier, and son Norman (Christine) Simcic. Also left to mourn are his grandchildren, whom held a very special place in his heart, Michael, Stefanie, Christopher, Meghan and Kristen. They will always remember their Grandpa to be a kind, honest, intelligent and generous man, who would often remind them of the importance of family and the beauty and comfort of home.

In Slovenia he leaves to mourn his sister-in-law Nejdelka, nephew Zeljko, and nephew Ivan (with wife Martina and children, Nika and Jacob). Stefan is predeceased by his parents, Marija and Anton Simcic, his five brothers, two sisters and six stepsiblings.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 25, 2016 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of the Sargent & Son Funeral Home, 21 N. Court Street with Rev. Luigi Filippini presiding. Interment to follow in St. Andrew’s Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to service. Should friends desire, memorial donations to the T.B.R.H.S. Foundation – Northern Cancer Fund would be appreciated. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
